Job no: 493837
Work type: Full Time
Location: Hobart
Categories: Freshwater (Hatchery)
We’re looking for an experienced Hatchery Attendant to join our Bagdad broodstock facility in a full-time, permanent position.
Working Thursday to Sunday on a 4 days on, 3 days off roster, you’ll work with a specialised recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), caring for broodstock and maintaining excellent fish welfare, water quality and system performance.
This role involves working independently for periods of your shift, so we’re looking for someone with the aquaculture experience, confidence and judgement to take ownership of the facility, respond to alarms and make sound decisions when working alone.
One of the highlights? For around three weeks each year, you’ll be directly involved in our spawning program, gaining hands-on experience across an important stage of the salmon lifecycle.
The role also participates in an on-call roster Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
What you’ll be doing
- Caring for broodstock, including feeding, fish health monitoring and routine husbandry.
- Monitoring water quality and RAS performance and responding to alarms and operational issues.
- Completing tank cleaning, mortality removal, flushing, grading, sorting and scanning.
- Getting hands-on during annual spawning, including stripping, milt extraction, gamete handling and fertilisation.
- Maintaining accurate fish, water quality and operational records.
- Keeping tanks, equipment and the facility operating to a high standard.
- Identifying opportunities to improve fish performance, safety and operations.
- Taking ownership of day-to-day activities and working confidently on your own when required.
About you
You’ll bring hands-on aquaculture, hatchery or fish husbandry experience and be comfortable working independently in a specialised broodstock environment.
You’ll ideally have:
- A good understanding of fish health, welfare and biosecurity.
- Experience monitoring water quality and aquaculture systems — RAS experience is highly regarded.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- The confidence to work alone, respond to alarms and manage issues as they arise.
- Good communication, attention to detail and record keeping.
- A current driver’s licence and reliable transport.
